Dr Alvin Pun is an Australian and internationally trained orthopaedic spine surgeon. He specialises in all regions of the spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum), minimally invasive spinal surgery, robotic spinal surgery, degenerative disc disease, adult spinal deformities, complex spinal conditions, spinal tumours, artificial disc replacement, sacroiliac joint dysfunction and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Dr Pun graduated from the University of Sydney with Honours in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery before completing orthopaedic surgical training in hospitals across Sydney and regional New South Wales. Dr Pun was awarded his fellowship by The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Dr Pun undertook four additional years of advanced spine surgical training in world-renowned spinal centres in Melbourne, Milan, Beijing, and London.
In Melbourne, Dr Pun completed a combined Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Spinal Fellowship at Austin Hospital and Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he was involved in more than 250 spinal operations.
Dr Pun also completed a Senior Clinical and Research Spine Fellowship (Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery) at the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi in Milan, Italy, before moving to Beijing, China, to undertake a prestigious AO Spine-accredited fellowship at Peking University Third Hospital, one of the largest spine hospitals in China.
Dr Pun continued his spine fellowship by working for a year at Europe’s largest orthopaedic hospital, the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Stanmore, London, United Kingdom. There, he concentrated on spinal tumours, complex spinal conditions, deformities, minimally invasive spinal surgeries, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Concluding his extensive spinal fellowship training, Dr Pun completed the spinal fellowship awarded by the Asia Pacific Spine Society.
Additional career highlights for Dr Pun include being awarded the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and Australian Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowship to visit orthopaedic surgeons in Brunei, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Indonesia. Dr Pun was also awarded an Aerospace Medical Clerkship with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Houston, Texas, USA.
Dr Pun is involved in research, collecting data to monitor patients' outcomes and progress. He has published in medical books and scientific journals and regularly presents at local and international scientific meetings.
He lectures at the University of Monash and is the instructor and assessor for Impairment Assessment Training Victoria: Spine & Spinal Impairment Guides Modification Document (SIGMD). Dr Pun is also a mentor for the Australian Orthopaedic Association.
